It is interesting to note that unlike Breen (who will fit the story soon), Nihilanth was forced to help the Combines perhaps Nihilanth was the leader of Xen, before the Combines invaded Xen, having to convince him to carry out the Combines’ plans. In the case of Xen this leader is Nihilanth (even so, it is not known whether Nihilanth is a Vortigaunt or not). The Combines then choose a leader of the dominant species, to act as a false leader of the world, to encourage other members of the species to conform to the claims of the Combines. Combines use a peculiar technique to obtain such control, this technique consists of taking the fertility of the dominant species in the world (in the case of Xen, the dominant species is known as Vortigaunt). The Combine Empire invades and gains full control over the dimension of Xen, turning all its inhabitants into slaves.
